There is a very large data centre coming to Abbots Langley. At 88,000m2 this will be one of the largest developments of its size in the country and the Government have given it the green light.
Knowing that this can’t be stopped GUCE’s heat network team started looking at how the impact on the local residents and environment could be lessened, and how the waste heat could be used to build energy resilience in the area.
In October 2025 GUCE kicked off a feasibility study, thanks to funding by GB Energy’s Community Energy Fund, to look at just how waste heat could heat homes and building nearby and ensure that, while we can’t stop the development, we can work to mitigate some of the impact and improve the energy resilience for local residents.
This project is now coming to a conclusion, with it looking viable and a realistic option for the future. As part of this though we want to hear from you, local residents who will be impacted by this development and by the ever increasing energy prices due to international events.
GUCE will be hosting a community event on TUESDAY 28th APRIL at 7pm to explain what we’ve looked at and what the possibilities could be. At that event we will also want to hear what you would like to see in terms of energy resilience and renewables in the area and how developments like this and planned housing sites could help fund them.
